I work in Human Resources for a major company around the Chicago area.
New-hire orientation introduces you to the company you recently got hired on with. They usually show you where to park, issue you a badge/uniform, let you know about company benefits, tell you your work schedule, and show you around.
I cannot give you time limit on new-hire orientation (the program I conduct for my company lasts around 6 hours). It all depends on how much you will need to know about the company.

Sometimes you will get your employee ID, your employee manual, and instruction on how your employer wants you to act in certain situations and what their expectations are of you. You may also get a drug test. They may go over benefits that you may be entitled to and they may talk about your pay (how, when, and how much). Since you are still in that first impression stage, you should dress as you were dressing to go to work. You never know what supervisors will show up an an orientation. Also you should bring your drivers license, SS card, any other licenses you have, and a blank check if you will want direct deposit for your pay. That is also a good time to ask questions. Good luck with your new job!!
The company I work for has a 2 day (8 hours each) orentation. I don't think that is the norm though. It all depends on who you will work for.

Could be anywhere from 30 min to two weeks. They tell you the company rules, the policies, how you have to dress, how to turn in your time sheet, how to get fired, the organizational structure, where the mailroom is and general info you need to work there. It's great and you can learn a lot. Most are probably a half day or a day.

They explain the company, maybe watch some movies, and a drug test. (Probably)
