Is it mainly community involvement or academic achievement? I want to apply to a major university in California (eg. UC Berkeley, UCLA etc.)

Universities are interested in your personality and what type of person you are and what type of person you think you want to become. Graduating with honors does show something about you, that you are dedicated but so are rest of the 100,000 kids that will apply to the universities. If this is the only thing setting you apart you are in big trouble. I find that good stance to take is to show that you are committed to your growth and education and becoming a well rounded person. You can and will do this with or with out the university. Show that they need you as well as you need them. Tell them why is it that they need you and why is it that you need them. UCLA is a sh!t school, only a bunch of pompous asses go there (I don't know may that is what you are looking for). Unless of course you are pre med or any medical major. Berkeley is a dream school, everybody in the world wants to go there.

Yes, I think it's very important when applying to college because they can see that you were a very hard-working and intelligent student to meet the requirements for an Honors Diploma. I got one - it's worth it! =)

It also helps a lot when applying for scholarships, don't forget. But make sure you do well with your GPA and SAT & ACT scores. Those are very important too, as well as any volunteering or extra-curricular activities and school clubs and groups.

You forgot SAT/ACT scores. Or being a national merit scholar. All of that matters. Get up as high as you can on every scale you can. High school grades are important. So are test scores and extracurricular activities. This is what i believe

they will thin out the applicants by binning anyone who did not achieve top grades. so yes they are vital.
