I want to buy a rodent (something small: mouse, gerbil, etc.) I don't want anything too high matenance, just something small and friendly. I had gerbils before, and they were fun, but I want something different, maybe a mouse. Any suggestions?

Gerbils are cute small and as long as you don't buy a male and female and put them in the same cage (they'll breed like crazy) they're easy to take care of they even have these feeders that hang on the sides of cages now where you put a lot of food in so you don't have to remember to feed them every day.

Rats are, hands down, the BEST small caged pet.

These guys are cheap, live about 2-3 years, easy to feed and care for, low smell (if kept reasonably clean), friendly, and intelligent.

They are day-time animals, so don't do the 'squeaky exercise wheel all night' bit. They rarely bite or even nip (if socialized), they recognize their keeper, can learn lots of cool tricks, don't try to run away or cower when held, enjoy exploring new spaces, and are just plain fun to watch play.

The ONLY drawbacks to rats are:
- the tail
- bad reputation for wild rats.

Dwarf Hamsters are the greatest!!
They are so tiny and look like little balls of fur. They are gentle and do not bite. They are very very low maintenance and they love to run in the exercise wheel. They are fun to watch!

What you are looking for is a degu.

Degus are actually marsupials. They are MUCH smarter than your average gerbil and far more social. They are also much cleaner.
