Hi Stella. I am a retired Chiropractor so my 'ego' requires that I respond to your question with the SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE that contradicts the medical doctor's opinion (who's opinion is offered with NO scientific support).
The following are exact quotes from the medical literature with the scientific reference for each quote.
1) "Tea is one of the most frequently consumed beverages in the world. It is rich in polyphenols, a group of compounds that exhibit numerous biochemical activities. Green tea is not fermented and contains more catechins than black tea or oolong tea. ... several recent studies suggest that green tea polyphenols may promote health and reduce disease occurrence, and possibly protect against Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases." - Drugs Aging, 2003;20(10):711-21 (researchers from Baylor College of Medicine)
2) "Catechins (in green tea) are in vitro and in vivo strong antioxidants. In addition, its (green tea's) content of certain minerals and vitamins increases the antioxidant potential of this type of tea. Recent human studies suggest that green tea may contribute to a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer, as well as to the promotion of oral health and other physiological functions such as anti-hypertensive effect, body weight control, antibactertial and antivirasic activity, solar ultraviolet protection, bone mineral density increase, and anti-fibrotic properties and neuroprotective power." (Note: NO DRUG can do all of this, and green tea has very low risks for side effects - although it may induce asthma in some susceptible patients.) - Journal American College of Nutrition, April 2006;25(2):79-99
3) "These findings confirm that green tea has excellent antioxidant properties..." - Food Chemistry and Toxicology, Dec. 2002;40(12):1745-50
4) "Our data show that consumption of 4 cups of tea/day (green tea not black tea) is a feasible and safe approach and is associated with a significant decrease in urinary 8-OHdG (a measure of oxidative damage to your genes that may relate to cancer risks) among green tea consumers after 4 months of consumption." - Cancer Epidemiology and Biomarkers Prevention, Feb. 2004;13(2):242-9
I hope this wasn't too long or complex to be helpful. Be careful about 'expert opinions' that are not supported by specific documentation ('medical school' means 'drug company opinions'). The above info. is legitimate and confirmable by looking up the listed research studies on Pubmed.

Recent studies have actually not been able to confirm any true health benefits to green tea. An earlier study said it decreased incidence of cancer but this has not been able to be reproduced. If you enjoy it, drink it for pleasure, and try to live a healthy lifestyle.
