How can people inhabiting the same planet come up with such wildly divergent interpretations of what's happening? Why do some people tend to have conservative sympathies, others liberal? It's not just class - there are poor and rich conservatives, and there are poor and rich liberals. It's not just upbringing, or intelligence, or level of education, or experience, or race, or gender. What, then, causes a person to move towards one point of view or another?

I think it's a mix of all those things...class, race, upbringing, education, and life experiences. In a family where all things are pretty much equal, members in the family see vastly different things. For example maybe if you have a Black friend, you may see how he faces various forms of bigotry every day which may make you more aware of his situation. However maybe your sister isn't close to any Black people so she thinks Black people are just too sensitive. Living our lives affects how we think and that impacts our political philosophies. That's just my opinion

It really comes from your basic views on life and truth. If you think there is absolute truth, that morality is necessary to maintain a healthy, free society, and that God does exist you will gravitate toward philosophies that represent that. If you believe that everything is relative, tolerance is more important than liberty and/or that there is no higher power, than you gravitate toward philosophies that represent that.
