I don't have time to look this up, but the gist from what I recall is this:

Freud had a more pessimistic view of human nature, where Erikson was a positive humanist in his approach.

Freud was always digging through the deep underbelly of the human subconscious. He thought unfufilled drives as children impacted directly our behavior traits as adults, even when we didn't realize it.

Psychoanalysis was having the god-like psychiastrist go through the average human's mind and giving him some clarity -- providing insight, so that he could change.

Erikson (I think) had eight various stages all people go through, most dichotomies of one abstract desire versus another. For example, I think independence vs codependence might have been one... or something similar.

[Note: Freud had stages, but his were more physical -- anal, oral, phallic, etc.]

Erikson really believed that people were good at heart and were looking for the right stuff -- that if they just tried hard enough, they would grow psychologically/spiritually and head in the right direction. Freud didn't.

Both men were actually somewhat neurotic. Freud was arrogant, controlling, suffered a lot of disappointment. He never quite got over Jung and the others disagreeing with him, and he broke off communication with them. He ended up suffering from jaw cancer and at the end of his long life actually committed euthanasia via morphine.

Erikson came later than Freud. He always felt as if he was a nobody and had to prove that he was worthwhile. He projected a certain public persona but never lost his own insecurity and didn't know quite who he was as a person. He felt he had to achieve in order to be seen as successful.

(His daughter Sue Erikson Bloland, I think, has written a wonderful biography of her father and the problems he struggled with.)

You can Wikipedia these guys and find more references, but this should give you a start. Good luck w/ your exam.

For tell the truth, I don't know aything about Erikson, but I think of Freud as a genius, the father of modern phsycology.
Recently I have been searching Freud's and his pupill Wilhelm Reich at google and yahoo and have find useful and interesting information.
I suggest you write Freud vs Erikson or read from each one and then make a personal comparition.
Good luck with your exam!
