If you dont have very much time to handle it a hamster is better, if you want a pet that needs to be handled and will demand it a pair of rats are much better. Rats are also much more intelligent and can be taught tricks. However the start-up is much more expensive because of the cage (they need at least two square feet of space per rat so a guinea pig cage or ferret cage should work well) and because they are so intelligent they need things to occupy their mind such as toys and new smells, sights etc. Here are a few sites so you can research care requirements and see which is better suited to your lifestyle.

Either can be friendly, but you have to handle the hamster daily to keep it friendly while a rat you don't. Rat's will stay friendly. I worked at a pet store for 3 years and was only bitten maybe twice by a rat but a few times each week by the hamsters so I liked the rats better. I have also owned both. (Currently I own 2 rats) And we can handle them a lot more than we could our old hamster. They just seem to make better pets in my experience.

Rats make better pets as hamsters often bite and are nocturnal.

i have 1 i prefer the female,
rats are intelligant, clean, and friendly,if handled correctly.

domestic rats r special bred therefor do not carry diseases as wild rats.
