Dr. Who! I am so glad it came to Sci Fi. I haven't missed an episode yet and I'm so excited for the season finale this Friday. I love it because of the story lines and Chris Eccleston is one of those people that are so funny to watch. Not to mention Captain Jack is such a hottie.

Two or three years ago there would have been four possible answers:
Star Trek: The Original Series
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Babylon Five
Farscape
But now we have a fifth option -- The new Battlestar Galactica.
Terrific scripts, brilliant special effects and first rate acting.
BSG is everything intelligent, faced paced TV Sci-Fi should be, but usually isn't.
It gets my vote.
(PS -- For the unobservant folks posting "Star Wars", note we are in the TV category)

first off to all the doctor who fans, Christopher Eccleston does not return for season 2 and 3. season 2 has started already in the UK... but Captain Jack is getting his own show, a spinoff called Torchwood and features him and Gwyneth from the episode The Unquiet Dead in Tardiff before the Doctor and Rose arrived.
now to answer the question. Firefly, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Farscape, new Battlestar Galactica, and Doctor Who are my top six, in that order. If you like any of these shows and have not watched Firefly, you should. It will become one of your favorites after the first few episodes. Fox cancelled a few season too early, but it did spawn a movie, Serenity. SG-1 is just great, even after RDA left, it added Ben and Claudia from Farscape.

Most people would say Star Trek because it spawned so many series but I would pick Babylon 5. It had great storylines and carried the story all the way to the end.

Stargate -SG1 and Stargate Atlantis, I'm starting to like the Dr. Who series but only because Billie Piper is in it.

Doctor Who is in a class by itself.
Star Trek I was weaned on...I mean Lt. Uhura... by the gods!!!
But Babylon 5 takes it for me. Large ensemble cast. easily believed human community in the future. WE ain't changed one bit in the future...and I find that realistic. What writer JM Straczinski did with storytelling has yet to be approached in episodic television let alone equalled. The cast was superb in every respect...and stone cold out of their minds as characters. B-5 pioneered the use of cgi as an organic part of the world the characters inhabited....on a regular basis.
Straczynski introduced us to unforgettable characters...
who all grew or changed or expanded themselves.
Ambassador G'Kar grew the most and became the conscience of Babylon 5...Sheridan became the sword used to untie the Gordian Knot of the universe...and behind every great man was the great woman...that was Delen...heart of an angel...with stainless steel for a backbone...Ivanova the second in command
who would go to bat for you if you did your job...and have your balls for bowties if you did not...Steven the doctor whose unswerving dedication to healing and helping people often put himin harm's way...the tragic figure of Lando Molari...and one of the most flawed creatutres in all of sci fi dom who pays for his mistakes and pays and pays and pays...Sinclair whose destiny did not follow the rules of time or space or matter...and finally my favourite character...Lyta Alexander...rogue Telepath...the next step in human evolution...hounded by psy-corp...augmented by the Vorlons...used mercilessly by her own people...the other tragic character of the Babylon 5 universe...and probably the best depiction of a telepath ever....and you never forget that she is human...ever.
The stories had me cheering when I knew all was lost and suddenly the White stars come through the jumpgate firing to save the day...it left me gasping when Sheridan is standing at the edge of the precipice and the woman is walking towards him, her arms outstretched, her face beseeching him to stay just awhile longer...and the Shadows are right behind her and you know what is going to happen...and the tears and I wipe my face again for Ivanova is telling us what Marcus means to her and you hear the raw emotion in her voice and she breaks down again and you hear the pain, feel what she is talking about, know what she is talking about...and you have to remind yourself later that its just a bloody TV show and none of its real and...Yeah!
Babylon 5.
Stories, characters, the human condition...writing that felt at its best...like living the same space as these people...not actors or characters. They took us on a five year ride...told us about their fears and their sorrows...their loves found, their triumphs...shared little pieces of their souls with us...and for those of us who went along for the ride...we are the better for it.
And if you decide to find out what this is all about...there is a secret to Babylon 5.
B-5 is about conflict. Watch the quiet episodes. They contain moments of revelation...that are born in pain.
Part of me says we'll not see their like again. But another part of me says..."Don't be so sure".
For those of you alien to Babylon 5...
May the gods stand between you and harm...in all the empty places where you must walk. Peace.
