Goaltending in Basketball is when a shot is in the air and a player on either team deflects the shot while it is on its way down towards the rim. That is why you have to be careful when doing an alley-opp because if u catch the ball above the rim it is offensive goaltending. Another way you can get goaltending is if u grab the ball off the rim and push it in.
P.S. don't feel bad if people make fun of u for not knowing u r still a good person.

Defensive Goaltending is when a defender blocks a shot on its way down to the basket. Offensive goaltending (does not exist in International Rules) is when an offensive player touches the ball when it is within the imaginary cylinder from the basket to the ceiling.

Goaltending is when the ball is heading for the after a player shoots the ball and a player from the other team knocks it away. And the player that shot the ball his team gets two points. But if the player shot the ball and the player from the other team blocks it and its not near the hoop that leagle.

There is no legal goal tending in basketball (and even if it was, you couldn't do it). The boys at school goaltend by holding the bottom opening of the hoop net shut so no ball can fall through. The hoop outside is tiny :)

here's the complete answer:
defensive goaltending:
1.a defensive player either touches a ball that is above the rim
2.touches/grabs the rim/net while ball is in the air
3.sticks his hand under the basket to prevent ball from going in.
4.touches the ball after it has hit the backboard (and assuming the ball has a chance to go in) like on a layup attempt EVEN if it continues upwards after hitting the backboard...so it's not just on shots on its downward flight.
offensive goaltending:
basically an offensive player doing the things mentioned above. of course an offensive player won't go and touch the ball on a layup attempt, #1 is the most common especially on rebounds/putbacks....while #2/3/4 can occur on accident.

Goaltending is when the defensive player swats the ball away when it is on a downward curve toward the basket. If the ball is still going up it is a clean block.

People are leaving one thing out.
Offensive goal tending:
Touching the ball when it is above the imaginary cylinder above the basket. This is called frequently during tip ins and is also a notoriously missed call.
Defensive goal tending:
Called when the ball is blocked while it is on a downward trajectory, unless it is going towards the backboard, if it is going down towards the backboard it is fine to block the shot.

goal tending is where a player sticks there hand inside the rim and swats the ball away from the hoop. it gives the opponant 2 points if the shoot infront of the three point line. if the opponant shoots the ball beyond the three point line then they get three points.
