Don't worry about the "correct" grade.
Being held back s one of the best things that can happen to a child.
It guarantees that he will be one of the older kind in his class. Things come much easier to the older kids. The younger kids are always scuttling along, trying to keep up.
Why make things harder than they have to be?

I think it depends on what grade level they are. I know if they fail anything under high school then they can still take summer classes here in Tallahassee. But if they failed in highschool, they may still be able to make it up there senior year. If you fail a math or english class in high school then you fail that grade, but the child will most likley be able to make it up in 12th grade. Theres always something you can do. Look into night classes at other schools. Go www.myflorida.com

There are programs that are generally offered in the junior highs and high schools that will allow him/her to do the extra work and skip back up to the grade they belong in. What grade did they fail? My mom's a teacher here in Florida and I may be able to give you some tips on what to be prepared for in the coming years.

You do have a few options. You can homeschool him up to the correct grade through an accredited homeschooling agency such as Seton. You can enroll him in a private alternative school that specializes in just that. You can speak with his school counselor about ways to do it with the public school system.

Yes it's possible for him to catch up, but he will have to work extra hard, get better grades, and then you can ask the principal to bump him back up.
Better find a summer school program to prove to the principal that he can keep up with the others.

depending on what grade they failed they may have to wait till high school. this way they can tale summer school or even night school. It use to be that if summer school wasn't required you had to get permission from an administrator, but either one may be a bit more costly than you think
