Because it is way cool, and everyone is doing it. They don't want to be different. They have to be like everyone else, you know, can't think for themselves.

Because they think it makes them look clever!!

They assume that no-one else can read it either, so they never think about double-checking the meaning BEFORE they have the tattoo done!!

I wouldn't MIND if they got it authenticated, at least that way it would be a 'meaningful' tattoo, but usually they just take the word of some loser tattooist, who couldn't care less about the true meaning of the tattoo, they just want MONEY!!

There are apparently a lot of women walking around with what they BELIEVE to be the kanji for 'geisha' on them ... unfortunately, geisha has 2 kanji, not 1, and the one that's used in a lot of tattoos actually means 'prostitute'!!
And they think they're so COOL!!!

HeheheheHE!!

The same reason why middle class Americans get 'tribal' tattoos when they don't belong to a tribe. (Although I guess Jewish people can be excused from this since they are the tribe of Israel. The irony being they aren't allowed to get tattoos.)
Trendy fads are stupid. If you are going to get a tat, get something that means something to you.
(Getting a tattoo of the Tazmanian Devil or the Superman shield is 10000 times worse.)

Without trends and fads, we'd all be doing the same things over and over again.
I'd be pretty boring if we all had the same heart tatoos with the word MOM in the middle.

I don't know, but there are definitely some tattooers who resent this, and for revenge they tattoo sayings like "big wanker" on their unsuspecting customers.

Yes, it cracks me up. I wonder if they know their trendy Japanese writing means "stupid Gaijin."
