First of all, this is a complete stereotype that's only true MOST of the time. how dare you generalize......secondly, to answer your question: it starts as a fondness for masturbation forcing an unusual longing for genitalia similar to their own. the attraction to the opposite sex still exists, however the desire/inability to lick their own vagina or give themselves head forces them to go to others.

The only answer I can give you is that for gay folks, since you're not buying into traditional sexual behavior, traditional gender appearance that is designed to elicit that behavior is not as important. Why not experiment? Once you get away from the narrow definitions that society puts on straight dress, behavior, sex, and appearance, why not just mix it up a little. Why worry about going too far? It is not like the femininity/masculinity police are going to come after you. Gay men don't want to be women and they don't want women, they want MEN. And gay women don't want to be men, and they want WOMEN. And there are a lot of different ways to be a man or a woman besides the narrow ones set down in the straight community. They want to be themselves, free of stupid societal judgement bullsh*t.
Once you stop caring about what people think, the sky is the limit. If people don't like it, f*ck em, it's not your problem if they think your clothes or attitude are too much, not really feminine, not really masculine, not real at all, blah blah blah. If they want to take time out of their busy lives to worry about your gender performance that is their choice.
Look at people and marvel at how they live their lives in ways that make them happiest, instead of if they are or are not keeping in line with a soically constructed cultural ideal. If you like their style, you hook up. If not, you move along.

Well, to start off with, I'll say -- I'm a lesbian. ..
I don't want women that look/act like men. Not all gay males want guys that look/act feminine either...However I don't find women that are masculine to be unattractive, it's just not what I'm interested in...Some are into that, & like I said some are attractive -- and let me tell you it's totally different than actually being with a male! -- It's something that str8 people will never understand...For example...lets say your BF gives u 0r@l...You know that's the main type of sex used for lesbians...so what would be the difference if you let a female do it? -- a tongue is a tongue, right? --- Wrong!!!..I bet you wouldn't allow that simply because a female would be doing it...So it doesn't matter what's on the cover of the book basically, its on the inside thats important...You get what I'm saying?....

gay people who answer this and say its just a stereotype need to stop lying, i go to gay clubs all the time, have gay friends and there are always the burly looking women and the most girl like men i've ever seen, it is a commonality and thats ok, i don't get it either though why the women try to look like men and vice versa

Because we are all a mix of both sexualities - male and female. Sexuality is not only about the bit that all of us have 'down there', it's also something in our minds which makes us more attracted to one way of thinking than another. I can't say why 'gays' don't just 'go get the real thing.' Possibly because, for them and for a variety of reasons which 'straights' cannot begin to understand, the real thing is someone who has similar protruberances.
I do have to say that it is ultimately about love, not sex ... who we can love and why. I don't pretend to understand that.

I don't. I like feminine women that dress well and are nice. I also dress nicely most of the time and I'm definitely feminine.
I think some do because society has brainwashed us all into thinking that the male/female pattern for relationship is the only way. I think it is very unfortunate that people aren't more accepting of differences in others and themselves.

I am sure you are generalising a wee bit , but thats ok.
My thoughts are in the same way as gay men, are often attracted to infeminate males (one who acts , behaves , dresses as a woman.) while women are 'traditionaly' attracted to men, similarily men are 'traditionaly' attracted to women.
So probably the best of both worlds.
Interesting question though

That's a stereotype. Not all women want manly girls, and not all guys want girly men. Some do, yeah, but it all comes down to what each person wants- just like how some straight women want manly, sweaty, burly guys, and some like more feminine, sensitive, sweet guys.

I've always been attracted to more masculine women. I like the masculinity without the male mindset or male parts.
