You probably should get hens instead

You need to get a good book as theres too much to put in here.
They need clean water available all the time.
They need shelter from the weather, and somewhere you can shut them away at night, preferably with perches for them to roost on. That way they are less likely to be eaten by foxes, although rats, cats and dogs are still a problem.
They need chicken feed, but what type you give them depends on whether they are laying eggs or not. You buy this by the sack from a feed merchant, or a pet shop may get some in for you.
They also need grit to help them digest their food. The best type is oyster grit, as they can get calsium from this which helps them build egg shells. They lose a lot of calcium when they are laying.
They can also eat cooked kitchen scraps but not meat as it attracts rats; greens, carrots, potato, rice and bread are fine.
You can also feed them any snails you find in your garden as long as you don't use slug pellets, and any worms you dig up.
You need to learn about how to clean out their hutch and pen, and about their diseases.

If you have a garden. make a chicken pen. When I had chickens I let them free in the garden, They eat slugs and insects, however they do eat flowers.
So if you have a flower garden then maybe the chicken pen is best. A pen also protects them from foxes.
Give them all your kitchen scaps and chicken mash which helps them lay eggs as long as they are female of course.
Chickens are great fun.

HI I have 84 chickens of my own you should make sure that thy have fresh water everyday because of the summer months and you should get sum chicken feed so that you can feed them thy should be feed and watered daily. and make sure that thy have a nesting box so that thy can lay there eggs is it make sure it is a little off the ground if you keep them in a pen you all so need sum hay or straw in there nest bow so that when thy lay the eggs dint break. if you wont the chickens to set on there eggs you need to just leave them there so that the chickens will sit on them. if not and you are going to eat them you should gather them everyday so that thy don't go bad. BUT most of all make sure thy are feed and watered EVERYDAY.

pretty standard really make sure you clean them out regularly and feed them good food plus plenty of TLC. The happier the hen the better the produce!!
also try and have an enclosed area for them to stay in not to small but if you don't you'll have eggs all over the place and have no idea how long they have been there!
good luck.

Make sure they are secure at night because just about everything likes to eat chicken! Although it may be different where you are at, I live in the middle of nowhere Kansas where oppossums, racoons, coyotes, and owls all LOVE to eat chickens. They will even try digging under the chicken coop walls at night.

You need a coop for them to be in at night and in there you can put nesting boxes. Fill them with straw and they will lay eggs in them. Feed commercial produce feed and have lots of fresh water for them. If all you want is eggs you do not need a rooster (male bird) hens will lay eggs with no rooster.

Um, you should say HENS, unless you got roosters, too. Hens will lay there own eggs, but if you want chicks (baby chickens), your rooster will help with that... Take your eggs out soon, because if sat there for a while, hens might say, "Mmmmm... those eggs, my children, tasted goooooooood!!!" ( they might eat them.)
