If you are part-time worker you should be able to inform your employer of what you can work, example if you go to school or have another job.
If you work for them full time they usually want an open availability but that does not mean that should not work with you for example if you are taking a class or two at a college.
If you are an executive then you are expected to be able to work at any time they need you.
But if they are a reasonable company they should work with for what ever the reason is.
