While he never commanded a fleet or won a ship to ship fight, Alfred Thayer Mahan was one of the most influential naval writers of the late 1800's early 1900......his major work was "The Influence of Sea Power on History" ( 1899?) pointing out that no country ever rose o worldwide power without a powerful Navy.........from Rome to Nelson's England.

Theodore Roosevelt:" The most important book of the age"
Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany: I insist that every officer of my Navy read this book.......

Mahans writings provided the intellectual underpinnings of the great naval building programs of 1900 to the present and so one can not possibly understate his importance

I only know one of his ideas which is that he believed the US needed a massive Navy to compete with the European powers. He saw sea power as the main means by which America could exert her power and influence throughout the world and become a global superpower like the UK.
