Some of the answers above are stupid. Chemically, an oxidizing agent is the substance that removes electrons from the other substance. A reducing agent is the substance that gives off their electrons so that the other chemical in the reaction can be reduced.

A reducing agent gives up electrons to another species and is itself oxidized.
