i live in buffalo, ny and i would like to travel to new orleans, la to aid in reconstruction efforts. i am extremely proficient at roofing and roof repair work, and am curious as to the requirements to perform this work legally. i would like to learn what permits, licenses, certifications, insurance, etc. i would need to do this, as well as whether any of this criteria can be transferred from my hometown.

You might also try going to Mississippi. They had a lot of roof damage there also. Just check in with the local Sheriff and ask where you would have to go or what agency would license roofers. The Sheriff knows everybody and may also help you with leads to get started.

New Orleans is not a safe place. You don't need your ladder stolen off your truck while you are sleeping and don't count on a chain and a lock protecting you. The idiots there shoot at the national guard rescuers for interupting their looting spree. New Orleans has NOTHING coming. There are many other small towns with NICE people in Texas, Louisianna and Mississippi. Try Sulpher, La or Jennings, La or Picaune, Mississippi. There are nice people there and they have plenty of work for you.
Good Luck
