i dont believe there is actually a best band, there is a band one is a fan of though.
every band or singer has a few great songs and lots of crappy ones, i like to choose the best from everyone.
if i have to choose a best one though it will have to be one of these:
metallica and ironmaiden
motorhead and guns an roses
judas priest and deep purple
defleppard

in that order.

why?
because im old and im angry a lot of the time.

Wintersun or Ensiferum (members of Ensiferum left to form wintersun so they sound very similar)
The Reasons why is because they're not afraid to play what they feel. both bands have made albums entirely of 9 minute epics. Almost all their songs are in poem form which is EXTREMELY hard to do. They also combine the most expressive vocals, for in all of their songs they'll sing in the rasping voice of finland metal, and a voice entirely operetic. They also dont shy away from unique instruments and different instruments and music styles. If I had to find a way to give their music genre id have to say their the almost nonexistent FOLK METAL. Probably the thing i like most about them is unlike other metal bands their music isnt angry or violent. Its definetley worth a listen. go to www.myspace.com/ensiferumfinland and listen to sword chant.

Judas Priest. They've been around since the early 70's and their style has changed a lot over the years (compare Sad Wings of Destiny to Painkiller). They have several albums that sound very different, yet are still awesome. And Rob Halford is an excellent singer.

EWF because no one sings about the ways of the world like Earth, Wind & Fire. Long before being global was a buzz word, Maurice White and his brothers-in-rhythm looked out on the world with a universality that bridged musical and communal heritage. Like the elements they represent, the smoldering passion of their songs embody the earthiness of the soul, the wind of the spirit and passion's eternal flame.

Muse because theyre so endlessly emotional and make me sing like an idiot just because I feel like it, and Blur because theyre amazingly versatile. Both bands have this bril prog sound to them (Blur's 13 and Muse's Origin of Symmetry). Plus Blur are so funny and alot of their music is a huge british joke (parklife, charmless man, best days etc), which makes me relax instantly when I hear it.

Oh and honerable mention to Syd's Pink Floyd.

I really like jazz, so Weather Report. Or maybe King Crimson or the Allman Brothers. I listen to all styles of music.

I'd have to say AGAINST ME! They have the most amazing stage presenceI have ever seen, their lyrics are pure genius and the music is some of the most solid i have ever heard. And the singer's voice is THE most powerful voice in the punk scene

I would have to say Live cause their music to me is so believable and uplifting. The lyrics are so well put that it makes you think and you can also get lost in it cause your so baffled by what they say.
