Silver is being oxidized, nitrogen from the nitrate is being reduced.

Oxidation half reaction:
Ag --> Ag+ + e

Reduction half reaction:
NO3- + 4H+ + 3e --> NO + 2H2O

Net balanced and reduced equation:
3Ag + NO3- + 4H+ --> 3Ag+ + NO + 2H2O

One good trick that I remember from my undergrad was "LEO" (Lose electrons oxidation) and "GER" (gain electrons reduction) ... the species being oxidized is the on that is losing election (i.e. becoming more positive or less negative) and conversely, the species being reduced is the one that is gaining electrons, or becoming more negative (less positive)

Do people just write their homework questions into Yahoo answers without even trying for one second to answer them? Unbelievable....how about taking 1 minute to look it up in your standard textbook instead of taking three minutes to get somebody else to write it up on yahoo. PATHETIC.
