this is no ordinary running toilet!
it doesn't continually run, it will just suddenly sound like someone has flushed it (not a complete flush, just the refilling part of the flush), but no one is anywhere near it. this will continually happen throughout the day, for more then one day, till eventually there is no water left in the tank
I've completely replaced the entire flushing mechanism, but no help
ruling out the possibility that I might have a toilet flushing ghost in my house, any serious suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Here is an easy way to tell. Take some food coloring(I usually use red) and put several drops in the tank. Make sure the water turns a bright color. Let the toilet sit. Don't flush it or use it. After a while, if the flapper is leaking, you will see some color in the bowl. IF the flapper is not leaking, you wont see any color in the bowl. Then you need to fix the fill valve. Hope this helps! Good luck!

You have a very slow leak around the flapper valve. It slowly drips until it lowers the float enough to turn on the water and refill the tank to normal level.

Replace your flapper valve and that will take care of it.

It sounds like you just need to replace the seat where to flapper covers the seat in the tank, this is simple, you get a new flapper (rubber) and follow the directions, GOOD LUCK!
