someone told me that people can be highly insecure and doubtful of themselves and yet still have a big ego? Is that to safe-guard their pride?

Ego is human nature to protect and look appealing to others. For instance when Martha Stewart went to jail she made sure she controlled all aspects of it...ego to protect damage to self-esteem. The side effect of that is that the ego becomes the dominate personality trait and only when the individual is alone and vulnerable will the destructive ego subside and teh hurt and emotional anguish present it'self.

I'm like that so, yes, it's possible. The low self-esteem is around others (particularly those who have achieved more in life than you yet far), while the ego is for people you are more comfortable around, people viewed as being "lesser", and when alone.

err self-esteem is how you view yourself

whereas the ego is your perception of how others view you

so you can have a low opinion of yourself but still believe that others have a high opinion of you

this more or less may vary by audience

i.e. you may have a big ego at work because you think everyone respects you and your professional ability

but on the other hand you may feel as though you are not very worthy of say...love within a marriage or some other facet of your life

it makes sense to me

A person with low self esteem doesnt think too much of themselves or is not confident...having a Big Ego is one way of justifying their void in their esteem...they probably say "nasty ugly things about others" to boost their ego....thats how they try to justify their low self esteem

yes. some people act the way they do because of low self esteem. also, when a kids tease another it usually the same situation. they try to make the other kids laugh at someone else to make themselves look better. if they are ok with themselves they wouldn't feel the need to make someone else look bad.

true. the big ego comes from low self esteem. even though the person looks self confident. inside he is very self concious

It is true. People compensate for their shortcomings (or their fear of shortcomings) by acting much better than they think they are. They come off as ego-centric and...well, they kinda act like jerks. Its a reaction to protect themselves. Deep inside they are very insecure.

Yes, I know people like that, they hide behind a big ego, to protect their real selves. Like a hedgehog rolls into a ball.
