Do I really need to follow the 1 inch of fish per gallon rule?

2006-06-07 07:28:26 · 9 answers · asked by Anonymous in Pets Fish

I realize i will need to put them into a bigger tank eventually, but if I put in extra air and filters do I really need 50 gallons of water to hold them? can they safely go into a 20 gallon tank. I really don't have the space for more large tanks. I already have one 29 gallon tank with 23 fish in it.

50 guppies in a 10 gallon is pushing it. As they get older you should really think about splitting them up in to different tanks. I myself had to seperate them by sexes, they just wouldn't stop having babies and I dont have the space or money to keep getting tanks to hold them.

If you want them all to live, then yes a 50 gallon tank. But also realize they will keep having babies too over and over until you have way too many fish to keep up with.

Maybe you could get two 30 gallons and separate the females and males.

If you do not want to have a large tank or have room, then I recommend giving some of the fish away.

Because if you keep 50 adult guppies in a 10 or 20 gallon tank the waste will add up so quickly and the water will get dirty quickly and become contaminated amd the fish will start to die off.

yes, you really need to follow the 1 inch per gallon rule (actually 1 inch per surface area rule)...so, if you're planning on keeping all 50 guppies into adulthood, you're going to need at least a 55-gallon tank...

if you don't have enough space for them, there won't be enough oxygen in the water for them, there will be too much CO2 buildup, and too much of a bioload (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates) for you to keep up with - in other words, you will suffer casualties...they will also become territorial depending on the male/female ratio and VERY stressed - in other words, you won't have healthy guppies...

also, unless you want 50 more guppies in a short period of time, you should separate your males and females before they become sexually active...in other words, pretty soon (about 2 months)...

Trust me I have about a 50 of them also but i keep them in a 10 gallon "LONG". Make sure you use a filter to cut down on smell.

-No matter what size tank its always going to stink with out a filter.

You should definistely buy a bigger tank. I suggest a 25 gallon tank.

The rule of thumb is for every inch of fish you want one gallon of water for fresh water fish (except goldfish).
