The home is in Lemay/St. Louis county. There was a report made on the company truck in the drive way, wondreing if we need to move the business to a commercial property or if we just need to file for permits.

Go to your county zoning board, and get a zoning license for your business.

Zoning boards typically turn a blind eye on home based businesses -- until a neighbor complains. Neighbors complain of too much traffic resulting from your business operation, the presence of big trucks in your property, etc. It may be your property, but if the truck is big and obviously commercial, then you may need to check whether having that truck parked in your house is allowed.

Zoning boards can shut dow a business, so I suggest that you check with them and see whether your truck can be allowed in your residence.

It may not be what you want to hear, but if neighbors already complained, you really need to do something about it now. And be nice to the neighbor!

Start with the St. Louis County Business Assistance Center and ask for the right person to talk to:

Some cities require home based businesses to be licensed by the city. You need to call the business license division of the city in which you reside, ask if they require a business license for a home based business.

The thing most cities will be looking at is if it is compatible with the neighborhood, they don't want you to have a Wal-Mart in a residential area where you have cars and people parking all over the block, nor do they want you to run a open all night MacDonald's where you have customers coming and going at all hours of the day and night, 24/7

Be prepared to tell them the type of business, how many people will be working at the business, normal operating hours and if you have clients that will cause traffic problems or parking problems.

If none of the above apply you should not have a problem.

I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

Well, before we start, unless you are in a Housing Association, it shouldn't matter what vehicle is parked on your personal property (driveway).
Now if you're talking about a huge truck or machinery, I can see where people complain. However, if it's just an "eye-sore", people will just have to live with it. You're still in your legal right. However, if the vehicle blocks any part of the sidewalk or road, or it emmites odor or leaks, then they have a valid complaint.
Permit? Don't have one if your property (home) is classified as a resident. If it is classified as a "business", then you have city codes for your parking area. For example, how big? Also, another thing you want to consider making your home a business site, is "is a customer going visit your home?" If so, there are building codes you must adhere to. However, if you are working at home with no customers, then, you still need to meet code but not as stringent.

Hi, I've just finished with this process. Visit your town or county office and tell them what you want to do. You should be able to get all the info and paper work you need b/c that's where you'll need to file everything once all of your paperwork is prepared to submit. If they don't know, they can point you in the right direction. The laws are so different from state to state that it's best to get specifics from you area than generals from here. Good luck!

You can get a business license at the city licensing division. Truck may have been in violation of subdivision rules or city ordinance and had nothing to do with your business.
