Dell is a little bit rough and tough. It is like Nokia Phone.

HP is not good when compared to Dell

When you look at the guts of the box itself, both are really the same considering the number of manufacturers that build the components for each OEM. What you really need to consider is what you intend to "do" with the machine. If you plan to do nothing more than word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, etc., then a standard configuration from either HP or Dell would work fine. However if you plan to rip music, edit video or graphics, play games, then you will have to consider a customized system where you can add faster processors, memory, disk drives (magnetic and optical), graphics cards, etc. You may even want to consider another manufacturer such as Alienware, Clevo, or Mac. Another point to consider is who is going to offer me the best in terms of service and support if something breaks. In my opinion this is far more important than the hardware itself. Things like how long does it take to get to a live person, how knowledgeable are the support staff, is on-line help available for general questions. Also think about where will you have to ship the machine if components need to be replaced and who offers the better warranty. In fact, there are lots of great resources out there that can help you build your own system. Maximum PC has their Summer 2006 issue out right now that shows you step-by-step how to build your own box and has excellent write ups on each component and how to pick the best ones. Whatever you decide, good luck.

As far as hardware and support Dell is the best. This is based upon your comparison of Dell versus HP. Check out Consumer reports for more information.

You might fihnd that there is a different manufacture of PC's that will meed your needs as well.

Without at doubt Dell. They have great products and good customer service. We've had three and they have all been great.

My parents however, have had nothing but problems since they bought their HP.
