You might opt for a floor model draws in through a 5 or 6 inch duct. You could get some cardboard or wood panelling and some flexible duct work and place the unit on the floor near your window.

The link below is one such model. It runs about $3k on ebay. There are cheaper ones that are about $1k. Depends on how big a space you are cooling.

i havent seen one that is vertical. I had the same problem at my old apartment. however, I purchased an air conditioner unit that didnt need to be on a window. i bought it from sears a few years back. it cools just a well (if not better) than a window unit. good luck!

Yes, vertical units are usually made for sliding or casement windows. Unfortunately, after searching around, the smallest width they make is 14 1/2 inches. Your best option would be to get a portable air conditioner. They sit on casters on the floor and are comparable in price to window units.
I'm sorry I couldn't provide any links, but all the sites I visited (best buy, whirlpool, amana, etc.) give session IDs, which make pasted links useless. You click it and you get a page that says, "sorry, session has expired."

Never seen one but you could check a search on the web for window air conditioners or the like.
