Never. If they're old enough to hold their own bottle, they are old enough for a sippy cup. Nursing should be a bonding experience regardless of how the child is fed, and therefore the baby should be in your arms when feeding.

My daughter is 8 months old, she started holding her bottle when she was about 4 1/2 to 5 months old.

My son is 7 months and likes to only hold small 4oz bottles. The bigger ones he fusses with. He actually prefers solids now to a bottle and has self-fed with a spoon since he was 4 months old.

I am a mother of three, I have a five year old, a three year old, and a two month old. It has been my experience that all babys are different and do things at different times. But if I had to give an educated guess it would be around six months.

I agree with 6 months, my son would put his hands on his bottle before that but his hands weren't big enough to actually grasp the bottle.
