I did a divorce in 1999 in what was one of the first "internet" divorces that were heard in my state. It was novel at the time. My client ended up marrying her internet affairee.
Over time, the internet is simply just another forum for people to meet each other. Just like a club, a bar, a church, work, school, the bus stop, etc.
Each forum has its own perticular strengths and weaknesses.
Dont think the "lies" of some faceless avatar or photograph sent over the chat room or through Match.com are any different from the lies people tell face to face.
In general, people need to spend time with an individual, meet their friends and family in order to properly evaluate the person. This is the purpose of dating. The problem that many people have is a rush to judge people on the quality of sex. The relationship lives and dies around the sex. This is no problem if the intention is to get laid.
If you want to have a great relationship, the internet, the bar, the church, the match maker, etc. is only the introduction, nothing more.
That is my rant of the day.
Thank you to all the married couples that keep my divorce practice moving along. Just remember, marriage is reversible ... kids are not.

My husband and I met online. We ended up running across each other in a chat room and started talking on a regular basis and things went from there. I guess, technically, we had met one another before when we were in our late teens and early 20s and riding the rodeo circuit but we never really knew each other then.
By the way, we've been together 5 years, married 2 and we're expecting out first child any day now.

My wife and I met at a conference but we spent three years as friends on the internet after that before becoming a couple because we lived in different states and she was married at the time.

I married someone I met online in a RP chatroom. We've been together for 9 years and married for almost 6.
I know of four other couples who married, and three are still together after 5 years.

Yes. I have also divorced someone I met over the internet. It just sucks to have to be so shy that they only way to contact someone is by email or hidden and secluded where only your best attributes are shown. Get to know them IN PERSON before you let yourself fall in love with them. Otherwise, when they show you their true red-flags, you'll likely ignore them. A dangerous scenario. Good luck!

Yes, someone that worked for me. It didn't work out as once he married her, had 1 child (within 8 months), he left her.

Sure, my ex wife married a guy she met off of match.com after knowing him for less than a year.
Now, how long these things last...who knows!
