Institute you will go for less time (usualy) and you get some sort of degree or certificate accredited by that school. You also just focus on what you are there for, such as if its a photo school you will only do photo. University is four years, you get a diploma that is recognized by all of the colleges in the US, and employers. You learn all kinds of things besides what you are majoring it, which they call General Education.

I think an institute is a technical school. Or a school specializing in one genera of career choice(music, electronics etc). But a university teaches everything just about and I think it takes longer to get a degree since u have to be well-rounded at the U since there's so much variety, but at an institue, it's just what U want to do.

well institute is an educational institution, especially one for the instruction of technical subjects whereas a university is an establishment where a seat of higher learning is housed, including administrative and living quarters as well as facilities for research and teaching.A university grants degrees

Institutes are generally specialized in Art, Technology and such. Universities are more broad.
