I believe that chiropractic is one of the most effective alternative healthcare practices today. Chiropractic is founded in the belief that the Central Nervous System (brain, spinal cord, and nerves) controls EVERY function of our bodies. When the spinal vertebrae are misaligned (what chiropractic calls a "subluxation"), they can pinch the nerves running out between the bones, causing pain, numbness/tingling, or any other type of general malfunction of that nerve's corresponding body part.

This is why chiropractic has great success in treating or helping: chronic childhood ear infections, numbness in the hands and limbs, digestive problems, asthma, migraines, allergies, chronic fatigue, and even in some cases infertility. Chiropractic philosophy believes that the body has the ability to heal itself as long as there is no Nerve Interference. By removing nerve interference, chiropractic aims to help the body heal itself by restoring its natural order. Chiropractors do not prescribe pain killers, because they only mask the symptoms of the problem and don't fix the cause.

I'm not bashing medicine at all. Medical doctors save lives every day, and there is definitely a time when surgery or medication is necessary to stay alive. But I also believe that in today's society, people use drugs as a solution for everything (how many drug commercials are on TV nowadays?)! I say, correct the subluxation and let the body take care of itself. Ok, I'm getting off my soapbox now before this runs on any longer . . .

p.s. What swissnick is saying sounds a lot like chiropractic . . . and he's right, the birthing process puts tremendous strain on a baby's neck, which is why babies should be examined by a chiropractor.

I am a retired Chiropractor so I might have a certain bias on this question. However, I would like to suggest that it really doesn't matter what form of healing art a practitioner practices as long as their skills and expertise are excellent. The competency of the individual practitioner may matter more than the 'specific form of therapy' in many cases. A competent Chiropractor can do wonders for a wide variety of health problems. But so can a competent Naturpathic Physician, or Acupunturist, or Clinical Nutritionist, or Homeopathic Physician, or even a medical doctor (not all of them rely on drugs).

A healer is a healer. Find a good one and you will surely benefit from whatever expertise they possess.

Best wishes.

I AM an alternative medicinal therapist and I am qualified in massage, aromatherapy, acupressure, iridology and herbal medicine. It depends on what your problem is. Iridology can tell you where you have a problem just by reading the abnormal patterns in the eye (iris) Herbal has many advantages and possible cures for many problems and acupressure/acupuncture releases the energy that has built up in specific areas that cause all the problems in the first place. Take your pick. There are a lot more.

I think it depends on what you hope to accomplish. Naturopathy, for example is excellent at preventing some types of heart disease, some cancers and Type II diabetes. But if you have Type I diabetes or you already have cancer, naturopathy has little to offer.

I'd say that Ayurveda is the best alternative medicine but I'd insist on TRUE Ayurveda--not the watered-down version you see here in the US. I say Ayurveda because it's the most complete of all the alternative systems, it emphasises prevention as much as cure and you don't have to subsribe to any particular religious beliefs.

Atlasprofilax - although hardly anyone knows it outside Switzerland and Germany.

It's a unique one-time treatment of your first neck vertebra putting it into the symmetric position it should be - but a vast majority of humans are born with this bone luxated.

The manual correction boosts the self-healing power in an amazing way - and a great variety of symptoms and diseases disappear in most cases - from whiplash over migraine and sciatica to many more.

There are therapists in California as well, and the treatment costs around 220 Dollars anywhere in the world where offered.
