The number one best place for inexpensive computers and laptops is the local paper. There are people who purchase new equipment every year, regardless if they need it or not. They like to stay "current" and at the "cutting edge" of technology. I bought a great computer with all the bells and wistles, printer, monitor, keyboard, microphone, speakers, and it was loaded with all the current software, for only $200.00 from the paper. Well, from the people who put it in the paper.
Also look at the local computer stores, the small ones like the mom and pops or other places. Sometimes people bring in computers they think are broken and ask for it to be fixed, then just leave it there as they decided to just buy a new one. Or they could not afford to pay the fee for fixing it. These folks also look for freebee's that some just donate to them. I know many people who have had a video card fail and just tossed the computer, not realizing it is more expensive to buy a new computer than replace the card. These folks have money and so they just don't care. Look for those who are just giving away a "broke" computer. They often advertise them in the paper too. Free to good home. Smile. No, free to whom ever wants to fix it. My brother gets these free computers, fixes them and then sells them. It is a side business he hopes to one day become a main business. He makes good money doing this in his spare time. He is also raising two kids on his own.
Good luck in finding a laptop. Just look in the paper and at the local small computer stores. I think you will find a good computer.

There are businesses that sell computers for people and keep a portion for consignment. I'd develop a relationship with one of the salespersons and let them know exactly what you are looking for. Visit a couple of times, check out what they have, and always try to work with that one person. Also, if you are a student, ask the teachers who work with IT or if you are a worker, try to get an idea from the persons in the IT department. Sometimes businesses also auction or sell their computers when they upgrade. There are so many sources-just look around and ask questions.

Check craig's list (www.craigslist.com) - make sure to choose your location, otherwise it defaults to San Francisco
