I would like to march the bass clarinet next year. I already play the bass clarinet for concert. How common is marching the bass clarinet? What are the major differences between marching and concert bass clarinet? What about parts? Do you just transpose the Bari Sax part? Help! I need some tips--- should I just march Bari Sax?

I usually march regular old Bb Clarinet but there are tons of them this comming marching season and we're lacking in the bass sound. I have seen a local high school band with a marching bass clarinet.

As far as I've ever seen or learned, there is no such thing as different "marching" and "concert" bass clarinets. They are the same instrument. Some people who own the instrument may own two and have a lower quality for marching that way if it gets damaged it doesn't cost as much to fix or replace. Most songs have a bass clarinet part because it isn't a rare instrument. I think it'll be lighter if you march bass clarinet, but either way it is cumbersome.

If you have your own plastic Bass Clarinet and a heavy duty neck strap....go for it! I was prevented from marching Bass Clarinet for all 8 years I did marching band in high school and college. Most schools are not willing to let a $1500 school horn out on the marching field with the part is redundant with the low brass. Bass Clarinet parts are out there for most marching arrangements, but every once in a while you'll read a Tenor Sax or Treble Clef Baritone part. Don't march Bari Sax....that monster is a killer on the body, shoot for Tenor Sax instead. I didn't march clarinet because I had inherited a very nice semi-professional wood horn. I marched Trombone and had to learn it from scratch.

Concert Bass Clarinets happen to be made of wood and are very tempermental in tempurature extremes.

I don't know much about the bass clarinet, but I do know that our bass clarinetists march Bari Sax during marching season. I'm not sure if it's for convenience or what, but I've never seen a marching bass 'net.

Moss bass clarinet players switch to regular clarinet during the marching season and only play the bass during concert season.

you can march with a bass clarient, just talk to your music director about what music you're using - it's not all that different than concert , good luck
