You tell him in the nicest way possible and if he persists report him immediately but discreetly to the police. If he is a stalker he lash out at your "betrayal"

If you feel someone is getting too close, and you don't desire it, I would suggest being firm with him. Tell him that he needs to stay away, or you will be required to get a restraining order. If he doesn't, actually get the restraining order. It doesn't hurt, in my opinion, to also carry with you some pepper spray.
