There are always pessimists, always negative people.
Usually they have problems in their lives or are malcontent with their current situation or feel they themselves or their current situation are inadequate and choose to lower their own views of "good" things so they can make themselves feel better.
Same reason some people insult other people or make fun of them for no apparent reason.

Today's society measures the good and the bad on the same scale of respect.
The average person will remember all the horrible things you may have done in your life-time and not the times when you saved someone's life or prevented a potentially bad situation.
There once was a guy walking down the street and he passed by a home where he heard a baby screaming. The screams were coming from a septic tank(slightly uncovered) in the front yard.
Without thinking, he jumped in and saved the baby.
But the Mother of the baby did not see his heroic efforts and regarded him as a trespasser and a kidnapper. So she called the police. He was later arrested for attempted kidnapping and vandelizing a septic tank.

The partial perspective is what that is referred to as, and the reason is that the individual who is feeling bleak, depressed, self loathing and tends to have thoughts of self destruction view the negative side and can be alternating with psoitive view points but when something negative happens to them they illicit the negative aspect. For those whom are happy, see life as good usually have a higher pain tolerance and feel that the small things are not as depressing as larger issues. The humen brain is designed to evoke emotional responses you must have balance of both good and bad or you will self destruct no matter what end of the spectrum you are sitting at.

It is easy for somebody to remember the bad things more than the good things because the bad seems to have more of an effect on their memory. When you are happy, your happy and that's it but when you are mad you look for a reason and in some cases people need to point the finger. However, if I focus on being grateful for what I do have, it makes the bad things seem less hence making it easier to move on.

Not just certain people, many people.
It's the butterfly effect. If you chase butterflys you can't get close, but if you stand motionless in a rose garden they will come to you.
If someone is trying too hard to be nice, I think they have a hidden agenda. It puts me on the defense.
Parents are worst case scenario broadcasting stations. So, factor their advice in, but don't take it to heart. Let them know you are listening by repeating what they are saying. Then they don't have to repeat the message. They know you got it.
Every time someone says something negative then say it back to them so they can hear themselves. Try not to admonish it sarcastically. Use the same tone. It disarms their position.

First of all you have to recognize that people choose to see the worst. It is always much easier to dewell on the negative than to make the effort to be happy for themselves or others. Our society has conditioned us to the negative which is rather Ironic because our minds dont except negatives. If I tell you don't picture a pink elephant standing on a purple poka dot ball. you automatically saw the whole picture. Most of spend our lives searching for happiness, when in reality we have to make our own happiness, and choose to be that way.

It's their thought process, their defense mechanism, some trauma thoughout their life at some point caused them to react that way continuously and therefore it has structured their thought process. In order for them to change this, it would take time with cognitive therapy.
Just don't let it bother you, it's a pattern and if you've noticed they react this way to EVERYTHING, then just remind yourself that it's them and not you. You may even want to point it out to them when they do react negatively to something you feel they shouldn't be, that may help them be aware and it can prompt them to get help.

Because some people are very negative. If they see the good in everything, what would they have to complain about?

it's the yin and yang of human psychology. good and bad seem to balance each other out. if you did something really bad to someone in front of them they would probably try to stop you or help. just ignore them, they may be having a bad or are just a rotten egg.

Some peopl are very critical and look for anything to point out to a person. You shouldn't let it bother you because they are just miserable looking for someone to pick on becuase they have nothing to do.
