It was so scary because people thought it was true at first. When it first came out the big deal was that it was a real documentary. So it was scary! However, now that you know it isn't real, and have been told what it was about probably, it isn't so scary to you. The unexpected is a lot scarier. Try to catch those horror movies in the theater next time, it is a lot more effective than your TV.

The film was only a part of the experience, when it was first released in the US there was whole urban mythology set up in place supporting it as genuine footage - as a stand alone film it isn't particularly scary and just creates motion sickness, however if it genuinely was the last moments of group of peoples lives ie it was real, then it would have been trully horrific - exactly what it was to those first US audiences.

It was scary at the time because people thought it was real. Another scare tactic in that movie was the unknown. You never got to see the "Blair Witch".

some people thought it was scary - some didn't.

Personally, I didn't think the movie was scary. However, after I saw it - I'd be thinking about it, and the "psychological thrill" kicked in for me. The scary part wasn't what you saw, but rather what you DIDN'T see.

And basically, opinions vary.

That "scariest movie since the Exorcist" was a thing called HYPE. That was one of the dumbest horror movies I have ever seen. Especially the part where she is crying and has snot coming out of her nose... That was just dumb!

omgsh seriously. I was like this is dumb, it wasn't scary at all, and it got really boring. Just walking around in the forest, I'm like this is so stupid. I left during the movie cause it was so boring.
