Because that is the way we have been trained to organize on the freeway. Faster traffic goes to the left, slower traffic to the right. A big reason is that most on and off ramps are on the right side, so it is slower to make merging and leaving traffic easier. The left lane moves faster because they have farther to travel and don't need to be stopping as much.

I know. Seems to me all the turn offs are on the right lane. I always seem to miss them when I'm busy speeding the the far left lane.

That is driving etiquette. Right lane is slowest while left lane is for passing or high speeds. Do not drive in left lane unless you go minimum 20 MPH over the speed limit.

All the people who are not speeding are in that lane. You also have to keep an eye on on ramps to be sure you don't get creamed.

the left lane is for passing only for a reason. so that people who dont want to go the speed limit dont have to. plus you have onramps and exit ramps from the right lane
