I currently have DSL through my local phone company...BellSouth. Since I have their DSL equipment, etc. what do I need to do if I am interested in going with another company? Can I go with another company since my DSL is through my local phone company?

Yes, you can go with a different company. First, make sure you are not under contract with BellSouth for the DSL service, as early termination could lead to a penalty, which could then lead to disconnection if you don't pay the penalty.

Next, simply go to http://www.dslreports.com/ and look up your state for which providers are available.

Sure you can! Providing the new dsl is available in your area. Check this first. If you purchased your dsl modem it may even work with the new dsl providers system! These are questions you need to ask the new provider.

If there is a company that provide that service you should ask them if they are willing to connect you and then let your current provider you want to quit from them - check the price so you will not be surprise
