I'm asking this because I know quite a few women who would try to obscure the reality of the painful situation to make it more palatable for themselves.Do most women do this?

Women are use to being looked upon as either being victims or helpless. For the mot part women tend to find a comfortable situation and adhere to it, not out of fear but out of being beaten down by society and by low self esteem issues--everyone has esteem issues especially if they say they do not. The reality is that until they see the situation that they are in for themselves and how destructive it is they will not be able to leave the circumstances. My suggestion to you is be there for them, listen, and advise but do not force them to listen to you as that will only make them feel angry and defensive because you are minimizing their feelings. Confusion is often met with anger and that is not the end you want directed towards you. Hang in there, all women have baggage some just have designer luggage with all the work that goes with it. Good luck!

I think that a lot of people, not just women do that. I've met a couple men over the years who have had to soften the blows and points of life in order to get through it. I don't begrudge them that as a legitimate coping strategy, as long as you don't make that your ONLY coping skill. In moderate and controlled and conscious doses, a little unreality is good.

While men with emotional pain tend to blow up, women blow in. This can be bottling things up, denial, or developing extremely unhealthy habits like cutting or eating disorders. Women with emotional pain tend to be self-destructive.

Reality is only how you define it in your mind.

Perhaps they are obscuring the reality of a painful situation ...

or...

you are defining (as real) a situation that she doesn't find painful.

hmmmmm.... what is "real"?

I am not for sure but when I deal with problems, I just pray and ask for others advice on what to do. Usually it helps. But when one tries to deal with it alone and get pretty hard.
