IMHO most medicine is pretty unhelpful and you will get over it in the same amount of time without medicine. But when you go doctors will give you medicine because that's what you expect. Or OTC people want a pill to fix their problems. It's a cultural thing. Some medicine is good. Mostly for chronic things. For temporary sicknesses i don't think medicine helps. Sleep will do just as well.

muchly dependant on the medication, but most of the "over the counter" medication targets symptoms instead of causes which means it's temporary. Tylonal, for example (or most any pain killer) just numbs the nerves in the brain so that they can't feel the pain.

most medication that comes in the form of shots is more of a direct aproach for curing illness and not just treating the symptoms. a lot of this is done by strengthening you're own immune system against illnesses like Hepititous A and B.

hormonal drugs are usually an attempt at treating causes. however, today's medical science doesn't know enough to do this efficiantly or very effectively and the drugs are usually a blind shot in the dark for treatment. they can also be dangerous. most anti-depressants now have a black label for causing suicidal thoughts in late teenagers.

If you have an infection a antibiotic will kill the organism causing you to be sick. If you just have a cold and take a decongestant it will just help the symptoms till the cold virus leaves your body. So in some cases the medicine helps you get better and in some cases medicine just helps you feel better till the bug leaves you alone.

It depends on the sickness (runny nose? fever? pneumonia? heart attack? strep throat? herpes? cancer?) and the medicine (Tylenol? amoxicillin? cholesterol medicine?)
