As a general rule, the U.S. is the cheapest place to buy a legal laptop.

I use the word 'legal' because some countries allow pirated software to be used. You pay a bit more for the laptop, but it comes loaded with thousands of dollars of illegal software.

I just did a quick search on HP and Apple's international websites. This will give you a good general idea.

U.S.
HP Pavilion dv8000 series $929.99
Singapore dv8200 series S$3,199.00 ($2,016.39 USD)
U.K. dv8200 series 799 (1,483.59 USD)

U.S. Apple MacBook 13" 1.83GHz
U.S. $1099.00
Singapore S$ 1889.00 (1,190.96)
U.K. 749 ($1,390.90 USD)

About £1,000.

I've found that UK stores charge pound for dollar. I bought a PDA in the US in 2003 for the equivalent of £150. It was about $270 at the time. When I came home, I discovered it was £265 new.

Now they're selling it for £150... three years on. Most of the guys inBest Buy and CompUSA were shocked to hear what we pay for our electronic gadgets...

Most laptops come with variable voltage settings so they can operate from 110 volts through 250 volts, 50-60Hz. Sometimes known as Worldwide voltage.

I think it would be cheaper to buy a laptop in USA than the UK

Hong Kong has a few good malls saving around 30-35% on UK price, I have always bought my pc's there, Singapore/Japan a little more expensive.

You need to watch out for a few things though.
Different countries have different setups for things like power supplies and internal power conversions.
Plus you'd need to pay export fees on top of it all.
Not to mention that the operating system and software might be in a different language.

It will work out cheaper but you should onyl by from Japan if you know what you are doing.

If you are in th UK it would be cheaper to go to PC World
