You could try Priceline, Travelocity and other low fare sites and even call an airline to let them know you are looking for a special deal.

Airline prices are constantly in flux... the best way to check this out is to go to one of the websites and play with the dates. Travelocity.com works well but sometimes it's better to go to the airlines website. Sometimes airlines will offer Deals that are JUST on their sites. When I say play the with the dates I mean not to just pick different weeks... Try many dates... but also mess with the day you leave and the day you're coming back. On certain days of the week traveling can be much cheeper. For instantance usually traveling on a friday is much more expensive than say a Tuesday. So Pick your Ideal time to leave and come back... then move the days around a little bit to see if one day is cheeper than the next. If not pick the next week or 2 weeks later.
Also If your in New York City pay attention to which airport you're leaving from. Sometimes you may find the tickets are MUCH cheeper if you fly out of say New Jersey instead of say JFK. Or if you change planes in London or some such. They may make you have a larger cab fair but it could save you a few hundred dollars on air fair.
Get your self a notebook and write down the dates the air ports and everything And if you find a great deal... Jump on it. The farther ahead you look for tickets the better price you'll get.. so look for july prices or august...
I'm from Wisconsin... my husband is in the Navy and we were stationed in Hawaii for 3 years. I know how homesick you must be. I've been there. If you are patient and thorough you'll find a good deal and you'll get home. It can be a royal pain in the butt, but it can be done. I would do some of this research for you but I don't know which airlines would fly to edinburgh. Ohh keep an eye out. Sometimes the programs will give you completely illogical flights... Like they'll want you to fly from New york to say Chicago and then to edinburgh... Which of corse is STUPID. So keep your eyes open.
May God give you grace and wisdom in this and May He Guide you in your travels and bring you home and back again safely. Grace and peace to you friend!

To answer the question directly, it will be cheaper starting August 21 when summer peak season airfare starts to wind down, and fall shoulder season pricing begins to take over. I see $590rt fares on Continental, nonstop between Newark and Edinburgh, starting Aug 21. Departures before that are $845 currently.
From Oct 31, some $490rt fares are popping up.

Edinburgh is a center of all the most useful points you can do, see and appreciate the city, see more with hotelbye . In Edinburg you'll find great times out and get the within scoops on the most effective little-known areas waiting to be discovered. Edinburg is also for family days out to national pursuits. Edinburgh has lots of prime attractions to meet all preferences, including a few of Scotland's most visited free and paid-for attractions. The city's backdrop of Arthur's Seat, the Pentland Hills and Edinburgh's Waterfront make the city a remarkable place to reside your holyday.

Summer is an expensive time because it's a big vacation travel time. You may be late to get a good deal. Costs will go down considerably (half or less) when summer is over. Sorry. Hope you make it home.
