I can answer this question over and over and over again...hoping that if I can make one person see the lgiht, my time is well spent.
Bush's intent to ban gay marriage is not even a real attempt to do so. They know and have known there was no way it is going to pass. The governemnt is not going to take away the rights and annul the marriages already performed in Massachussettes.
The only reason he even did that is to throw a bone n the direction of the conservative christian base of his party to ensure that they will come out and vote for a republican in Novembers election. He is basically using these people as patsies to gain political ground for his party.
Again I will say.. mariage is NOT a religous instituion. If it were atheists and devil worshippers would not be allowed to marry. More so, two people need not go thru a church to marry, they can just go see the Justice of the Peace, follow the steps and get married. This is simply another symptom of a society that has too many people who feel the incessant need to prove they are superior to another group of people. Historically it's not the first time, and sadly it will not be the last.
Interacial couples could not marry legally across the US until 1967. The popular opinion was If God wanted the races to mix he wouldn;t have put them on seperate continents. A majority of people agreed with that and hence many families could not be real families. Sadly, there are still people who feel that today.
Gay marriage would not harm the instituion of marriage in any way whatsoever. If I were to marry my significanyt other, which I intend to do, how would that affect you? it wouldn't.
Marriage is also not soley used for procreation or infertile ppl or ppl not intending to have kids could not marry. There would be strict guidelines on when and how many children a couple would produce. There would be mandatory fertility tests to get a marriage license.
So take children and religon entirely out of the debate and what are you left with? Nothing. There is no valid reason may couples should not be allowed to marry.
Additionally, it is enevitable. It will happen. So get used to the idea of it.

I was raised catholic and always felt that gay people should have every right to marriage. Most people I know, if not all, feel the same. Love is love. The bible says **** about not lying with another man etc. but that is all bull just like the bible condemn women who are raped and don't scream loud enough, and condone stoning women over minor thing along with a ban against mixed fibre clothing

I strongly support bush to ban gay marriage. It is immoral and inappropriate for anybody to parade himself or herself as GAY.If any of you were born by GAY Parent let the person stand up and tell the whole world. Then the person will be ostracized by society. It is moral decadence and that's the beginning of the fall of America's greatness if we don't change from this madness. If anybody wants to be GAY,It should be done in secrecy and not in the open.No child would like to tell anybody that the parents are GAY.If people have tried to get married or have been jolted by the opposite sex, that should not cause that person to hate the opposite sex and turn to become GAY for ever.Whether constitutional amendment or not I strongly support the banning of GAY Marriage throughout America because it is not marriage at all but two people of the same sex trying to legalize their bad behavior.Enough of this TRASH.BYE

I think he's throwing the whole gay-marriage thing in our faces to distract us from real issues, like the war in Iraq, etc. And it's completely immature. I think that if individual churches want to decide for themselves whether or not to perform or recognize gay marriages, fine, but don't drag the constitution into it. It's supposed to give us rights, not take them away. And besides, having it say "everyone can get married, except these people, because they're gross" is just silly to me. It's like a kid's clubhouse with a big old sign on it saying "no grils [sic] allowed."
I mean, good grief, Dubya, grow up.

I think bush is trying to do what he thinks his people want of him. A majority of america wants gay marriage banned. What those people who want it banned need to realize is we live in AMERICA the land of the FREE! We let girls who are 20 get married to men who are like 70 or older...we let violent abusive people marry others. What is the difference if a gay couple wants to get married? Nothing....its just a preferrence on how you live....Bush and all the rest of America needs to remember that our country is a country where people have the freedom to do what they want. Including who they marry.

To the answerer who thinks gay marriage is morally wrong.
Adultery is morally wrong. Should we amend the constitution to ban adultery.
Divorce is morally wrong. Should we amend the constitution to ban divorce?
Producing unwanted children out of wedlock is morally wrong. Should we amend the constitution to ban that?
All three of those would do more to protect the sanctity of marriage and promote traditional values than banning gay marriage, but I hear so few... even extremist conservatives screaming about those things.

It's not going to work.
Last week on The Daily SHow they has WIlliam Bennett on discussing htis.
The reason they are trying for an ammendment is, the courts are on the verge of saying it's unconstitutional to stop us from getting married.
It's getting really close =)

I think it's sad that there is such an openness of hatred and bigotry against homosexuals. It's going to take a long time, but I just hope that one day things will be better.
