it's always been like that. It's just that as the world becomes more and more populated..we are informed of the earthquakes/eruptions because of their risk of harm to the people who live around them. But there is no increase.

Volcanoes and earthquakes tend to happen in the same places, and they have been doing this for a long time. If you look at the story the rocks on earth tell us about volcanic activity in the past few billion years, this is not a particularly active time for volcanoes in general.

On the other hand, the population of the earth has doubled since 1963, so you have more folks living in places that have a lot of volcanic and seismic activity. Some of the buildings are much taller now, and topple in more spectacular ways with more damage and loss of life than say, huts with grass roofs. And communications is such that we see more photos and video of disasters in far off places than we would have 40 or 60 years ago.

So there are reasons for your perception that there is more volcanic and seismic activity than their used to be. It just so happens that these reasons don't really have anything to do with the frequency or severity of the volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

The reason most volcanoes and earthquakes happen in the same place is plate tectonics. The second link below takes you to a site that explains the basics of plate tectonics.

Yeah I was wondering this a bit ago. The earth still moves around, and so do the plates. Plates moving can cause earthquakes and volcanos! The earth is just moving around a bit more than usual at the moment in certain areas.
