ROM is your hard drive. RAM is your memory. Both reside inside your computer. You will not see these items on the outside of your computer. The hard drive is where all software, and documents, music, pictures, and all other media is stored on your computer. Memory is what the computer uses to do its work. It is rather like a note pad where the processor writes down information to follow while working on requests. Without memory the computer could not work.

Now, your CD/DVD is what you need to put software programs from CDs into your system. If you have two, which one you use is not important, they will both load programs off of CDs. You only need concern yourself if you are making DVDs.

Look on the front of your computer. You will see several strange looking slots. These slots are the USB slots, photo card slots, etc. You will also see the power button.

Look towards the top of the computer. You will see what is like a stereo CD slot. It has a small button you push to open it. When you push the button it will slide open. When you push the button again it will slide closed.

Open the CD/DVD slot/carriage. Place the CD into the slot, with the front (the words) facing up. If it is to the side, place the blank shiny side of the disk against the carriage, and use the round middle upraided holder to hold the CD in place. If it is facing up, then just place the CD so the words face up. Push the button and it will slide into the slot.

By sliding the CD into the slot, it activates the CD. The computer begings reading off of it, and shortly you will see something on the computer screen. This is the software installation utility wizard. This installation utility will walk you through the installation. Now, you will be given two different installation options to choose from. You do not want to use the custom installation. That is for those who have exeriance and can pick and choose which parts of the software they want to install. You want to choose the "typical" "full" or "complete" install. The words are different with different programs venders, but it is all the same. Just pick the one that is not the custom install and you wil be fine.

Follow the on screen promts. You will be asked to agree to a "end user license agreement". Skim through this so you know what are your rights and what you can and can not do with the software. Usually it tells you that you can only use it on one computer, and can only change it if you get a different computer. Anyway, skim the agreement so you know what to expect.

Continue following the promts, clicking on "continue" or "next" whichever this vender uses to get you from screen to screen. At the end you will see "finish". Sometimes you will need to reboot after an installation. If you are in the middle of something and can not reboot without loosing your work, click "reboot later". Often you can use the newly installed program right away without rebooting. Click "finsih" and you are done. You should find a new icon for the software program on the desktop. You will also find it listed on your "all programs' list now too.

Good luck with your program.

Get XP for Dummies and Computers for Dummies. They both explain stuff in plain english and with diagrams.
What is it you're trying to do? Write back with a few more details.
You've probably got a dvd writer installed. It will also play cd's. It's just the same as the cd player on your stereo. There'll be a button to make the tray slide in and out. You put the dvd or cd in the tray the same as you would in your cd player.

OS means Operating System. This is Windows, and you've probably got Microsoft Windows XP. Other people use different OS. There's Mac or Linux. For beginners, Windows XP is best.
Software, or applications, are the programs you install. Windows comes with some software already installed. You'll have Notepad and Wordpad, which are for typing, and Media Player which is for listening to music and watching some kinds of films.
If you want to install other software, it means you want to add another program. You can get these on disc (cd or dvd). Once you know what oyu are doing you can get legal software off the internet, but I wouldn't do that yet.
When you put the cd in the tray and shut it, some will start to play by themselves. This is called Autoplay.

ROM is Read Only memory. This is your hard drive. Its where your files are stored and if you switch your pc off they'll still be there next time you awitch on.
RAM is Random Access Memory. This is what your OS and programs use, so the more the better. It clears itself when you switch off.

If there's a slot with a button next to it on the front, it's probably the floppy dic drive. Floppies are a bit old fashioned but very cheap and can be wiped and re-used.

Try to take New Clait at a college near you. You'll get started on the basics.
