Three of us in the office and I'm the boss. I reckon the atmosphere is too serious - partly my fault but not totally - and want to make it more relaxed. Any ideas? No theme days or other cheese, please!

Ensure you act as the "best" employee and not as a boss. Carry your employees along & openly appreciate the contributions of all in the presence of all. Be cheerfull & encouraging, operate an open door policy where they can approach you on all issues related to their official & private life.....show interest once in a while in what happenes in thier homes. Above all love them equally & dont have any favourite amongst them. Mark special days like the day you won the 1st contract, birthday of the company & employees' etc with celebration in office.....mind you during lunch hour and have lots of fun together.

First start to call employees by their first names, inquiry about their families. Secondly, surprise them with coffee and donuts. Third, during the coffee break, tell a few funny experiences concerning yourself. Then you will see the office atmosphere chance as others tell their experiences. Result: increase in office production

Something I do at my office (even though I'm not the boss) is write silly holidays on the bulliten board. For instance, July 27th is "Take Your Houseplant For A Walk Day." People enjoy talking about it--it's just something different.

I was going to suggest setting the exits on fire but that would only make it more fun not relaxed. Try having arguments always relaxes people after a good heated debate, shouting across rooms makes people more at ease.

Try looking at "office attachments" in Yahoo, normally has very good and funny ideas. Dress down Friday sometimes work, people seem relaxed and work better but it depends in the areas of work you do.

There are about 15 in my office and we will have days where we all go out to lunch or go for drinks after work. It's amazing how different coworkers can be out of the work environment.

The boss is never suppose to get close with their subordinates so do not have "fun". You will lose respect. I had a friend who made that fatal error years ago.
