He's hitting .236, 5 HR and 25 RBI over 47 games (roughly 1/3 of the season). Last year he hit .280 or better every month through August. Drop him? Estrada from Arizona is available, not that he'd be a whole lot better.

I don't have an extra bench spot to put him temporarily in case he heats up.

I think Varitek will bounce back, he's one of the best catchers in the MLB. As long as Boston isn't invaded with more injuries he's end of the year stats will be something like:
.297 27 HR, and about 98 RBI
so it's your choice those stats aren't overwhelming, but keeping him is a safer pick then picking up Estrada.

I would take Estrada by only a slim margin. I dont expect either one to put up sensational stats, just decent ones. The one reason I would take Estrada over Varitek is because Estrada hits in a more friendly hitters park.

Well Estrada average wise will be better. If I were you, I'd pick up Estrada and bench Varitek until he gets hot.

'Tek has been bothered by a strained muscle in his a** all season. Once he gets over that, he might start hitting again. That being said you could pick up Estrada and keep 'Tek. Use Estrada when Wakefield pitches. Varitek never starts when Wakefield starts (Mirabelli does).

Be patient and stick with Varitek. He is a much more established player and is likely to heat up at some point. He is also part of an overall more powerful Red Sox lineup, and Fenway Park is as hitter-friendly as it gets.
