When Columbus sailed in 1492 (the year Ferdinand and Isabella unified Spain under Catholic rule) it is said that the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria were already old ships. So thy were probably Moslem-built. I heard, but as yet not verified, that in his logbook, Columbus noted that he had seen women in Arab garb on Hispaniola.
During the "Dark Ages" Andaluz had a thriving civilization rich in scientific, cultural, literary and philosophical advances. So it appears to be likely that Columbus was not the first to travel that route.
