Open up your case and see which fan is having issues, yank it out and replace it...if it is a case fan..easy switch, if it is a CPU fan...little bit harder...if it is a chipset fan...PAIN IN THE A$$!!!

1. If your hard drive is working, it most likely is not your hard drive.
2. Sounds like a fan scraping. You have 2 fans in your computer. (one on your processor, and one in the power supply)
3. Open the system up, and try to locate the culprit.
4. Buy a can of that canned air, and clean out all the dust in your system (you will have alot, if you havent done this)
5. Wiggle the fan, on the processor, see if it stops, or see if a wore is rubbing up against the fan.
6. replace the fan, if none of the above works.

Could be a number of things, but grinding, especially when it's followed by a slowdown in your computer's speed for short periods of time, is a sure sign of a hard drive on its way out... It would be a very smart thing to back up all your data or create a copy "image" of your hard drive. And pretty quickly.

Could be the fan, try taking it to CompUSA or something, and have them turn it on, it may need to be cleaned. They will check it out for free though and you can decide whether you want them to fix it

could be the cooling fan or the harddrive, you need to get it checked out, or take the side off and locate it your self
