I'm sorry to hear that. SIDS can impact children up to 24 months, I believe, although anyone can die in the middle of the night for a random reason. It's just easy to throw the SIDS label on young children when no other cause is apparent.
There could be genetic defects (especially of the heart, liver or enzymatic system), a rare allergy, sudden illness, unanticipated toxin (ie, in the bedding or in something she came in contact with during the day).
Your neighbors need a good neighbor to help them out in whatever way they need. Good opportunity to be an angel to them.

If there was no other known cause that could have led to her death after examining her in an autopsy, doctors would just assume it is SIDS. Fifteen months isn't too old. It's called "Sudden Infant Death Syndrome," so she was still technically an infant. Also, SIDS has no known cause, so when a baby dies without any reason, it's often attributed to SIDS.

Typically, SIDS is a year or younger, but I am sure there are exceptions. However, I saw a show recently saying that SIDS is being used way to frequently as a cause of death. As an easy explanation. If any of you are having doubts, bring them up.

I dont think at 15 months old it was SIDS. By then babies can hold themselves up and walk/crawl so if anything the child would be able to move itself. But I am very sorry for the lose.

It could be linked to the immunization shots! Ask neighbor when she had her shots last! Children do NOT need that shot or at least wait until they are 2 years of age. If the mother breast feeds then the child's immune system will be fine because of the mothers milk. These shots for kids are a multimillion dollar business. There are a lot of people and some doctors that are against these shots. I'm sure you can find the cons about the shots on the web.

SIDS is defined as the sudden death of an infant under 1 year of age, which remains unexplained after a complete investigation and autopsy is performed.
So, by definition, she did not have SIDS.
