You know, I understand how you may feel this way. However, it's quite natural for people to stick up for a sport they like. Just like football...for example...if people like it, they will stick up for it until the end no matter what people think. That's the beauty of being a fan...a true, old fashioned fan of a sport. I happen to be a large NASCAR fan and I would stick up for it in a second. But I'm far from being a redneck. I live in the Northeast, and I do a lot of things that a lot of people think is stuffy and elite...and not redneck-like. I am nothing like a redneck, but still adore the sport. It's just something I like...just like I enjoy watching water polo....or just like I enjoy playing tennis or fencing. I'm sure you understand what I mean. Don't assume that all NASCAR fans are all rednecks. I'm not, and I know others who also aren't. I know you'll probably just pick a best answer from somebody who writes the opposite of what I'm saying (or should I say, typing!) but try to understand my meaning.

Well, then I'm a backwood crazy that is in the top 30% of a class of 720, a cumulative GPA of 3.6 and a member of the National Honor Society. NASCAR fans stick up for NASCAR the way Yankee Fans stick up for them and how Steelers fans stick up for the Steelers in Cincinnati.
NASCAR drivers have pure skill. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to drive a car 190 mph down straightaways and 170 mph turning a corner banked 25 degrees, let alone doing it with 42 other drivers all wanting to be in the same place-1st for four hours. NASCAR drivers are cool people. They don't mind having fans come up to them asking for an autograph. They know that it's the fans that give them their job. 99.9% of the time they don't go straight from their cars to their trailers. They talk to the media, their crew, their fans. They aren't like football and baseball players who go straight from the field to the bench to the locker room, without any contact to their fans. They don't seem to realize that if the fans weren't there they WOULDN'T HAVE A JOB! Nascar drivers realize this, and if you would have an open mind to life and not ask questions with insults in them, you would realize this also, and you would have a better outlook on life.

Well, guess what, not all of us NASCAR fans are rednecks. I am a college student, majoring in psychology, with an IQ of 120...far from some dumb redneck. And to the idiot who tried to use the word 'hoosier' as a slur...a few of Nextel Cup's best drivers are from Indiana, and one of those 'hoosiers', Ryan Newman, has a college degree! And as for NASCAR not being a 'physically demanding' sport, those cars don't drive themselves, and they don't have the perks that street-legal vehicles have, stock cars for racing are quite a handful to drive...no air conditioning which means those drivers get awful hot..and a race can go on as long as six hours, especially counting the cautions that make a race longer..with no breaks to stretch or use the john...and if you think all drivers are out of shape...look at Carl Edwards on the February 2006 cover of ESPN Magazine.

well, the to the rude jerk above me, the machines do not drive themselves. NASCAR is a sport that is very similar in the physical characteristics that are needed for football, hockey, baseball and basketball. I am a woman who graduated in the top 10% of her high school and college class, own my own home, have a well paying job and just happen to enjoy NASCAR over other sports. One of the main reason is for the fact that we don't encounter idiots like you while we are totin' our coolers to the infield to hoot and holler for our favorite drivers. Can you drive 180-220 mph, inches from 43 other cars for an extended period of time? Do you know drivers can loose up to 10 lbs per race due to sweating? There is no half time or intermission or bench or time out that they can rest. They are in that car, always thinking, always alert and attentive to what is happening around them, for 4-6 hours at a time, and that doesn't count qualifying or happy hour. NASCAR drivers are some of the most approachable people in sports. The fans are all one big family. Have you ever been to a race, have you given it a try? Then don't bash all of us who love the sport. To NASCAR wife, god bless your husband and what he does. He is one of many who makes my weekends more enjoyable. Now, if you will excuse me, I will soon be spending 5 days at MIS's infield, doing what I love. I have a great deal of things to do to get ready. I need to find my flip flops, wash my cut off jeans and black tees, buy the ice and busch for my cooler and go beat my kids for a bit.

All NASCAR fans are not "rednecks". Yes, the sport started in the south, but most of the drivers now could not even be considered rednecks (look at Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson). "Redneck" seems to be used as a replacement for southern, and southerners are loyal!

what about the rednecks that don't like Nascar but keep getting sterotyped into liking it? It must be like being mexican and not liking tequilia or borritos...
Anyhow, I liked Nascar way before I was ever called a redneck or knew what a redneck was...matter of fact i was watching Nascar over 13 years ago now...back before there was the large crowds of fans...
