This might take a bit to read, but ill type as much as i know.
the original lineup, as far as i can remember, was dave mustaine, james hetfield, ron mcgovney, and lars urlich. sometime before kill'em all came out, ron mcgovney left the band and was replaced with cliff burton. that was pre 1983.
after kill em all came out, or sometime during the recording of or shortly after, dave mustaine was kicked out of the band, i think it was on the kill'em all tour, and replaced with kirk hammett.
ride the lightning was released in 1984 with the lineup of cliff burton, james hetfield, kirk hammett, and lars urlich.
then in 1986, master of puppets was released with the same lineup. on the 86 world tour supporting puppets, burton was crushed by the bus they were touring on after an unfortunate accident.
Metallica then went on a few year hiatus to look for a new bassist, finding Jason Newstead at some bar when he was playing for i think floatsam and jetsam, then heading back into the studio to release 1988's ...And Justice for All. if i remember correctly, i think it was in canada during this tour that hetfield burned himself, but that might have been on the black album tour too, i get the dates fuzzy sometimes.
anyway, in 1991, metallica released their self titled and biggest selling album to date, the black album. somewhere in this time frame too, they released their live s#!t box set, encompassing everything from 83 to then present, be it 1990 or 1991, i think maybe even 1992, it might have some black album stuff on it.
between 1993 and 1995 im not to clear on what happend, but in 1996 load came out, then 1997 reload came out, 1998 garage inc came out, highlighting some of their older recordings before kill em all came out, and some new covers they had done while recording other albums.
in 1999 S&M was released, highlighting metallica redoing some of their popular songs with the san francisco orchestra, as well as some new songs they had not released to date.
jason newstead left the band sometime after that because he felt he had never been accepted as a replacement to cliff, even though jason had been on two of their most popular albums ever released.
james hetfield admitted himself to rehab in 2001 or 2002 for drinking too much, and at that point it looked like metallica would never again put out another album, but to the shagrin of many...
in 2003 metallca released st anger...
i hope that does a good enough job, post if youve got anymore specific questions.
id recomment buying garage inc, its got a very descript history of the band, most of this information being remembered from that particular album insert.
